This week, I’ve picked (at Jocelyn Hoppa‘s suggestion) the trailer for the upcoming movie about the Panama Papers called “The Laundromat” starring Meryl Streep, Gary Oldman and Antonio Banderas. Check it out below.
The Panama Papers investigation has been the biggest data leak of all time. In 2015, an anonymous leak of 11.5 million documents (40 years’ worth of information!) from Panama-based law firm Mossack Fonseca revealed the illicit use of offshore bank accounts by the world’s rich and famous.
The International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ) dissected the leaked data for more than a year before releasing the facts of the investigation to the public in 2016. In order to untangle the web of shell companies and other money laundering tactics used by Mossack Fonseca, the ICIJ used the Neo4j graph database – along with graph visualization tool Linkurious – to quickly discover hidden relationships between various entities in the data.
To date, more than $1.2 billion of tax revenue has been recouped in 22 countries, and tax evasion investigations continue in more than 82 countries. In 2017, the ICIJ was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Explanatory Reporting for their work on the Panama Papers investigation.
